Several UserControls containing server side actions are implemented and can be placed on pages. While the SwissCantons and the Topics UserControls are based on the ContentByQueryWebPart the ImageOfTheHour UserControl is an implentation of the DataViewWebPart.

Basically, each controll can be placed on a UserControl as done with the custom search result control.
